The King’s Academy, 4 Students National Merit Scholars And National Hispanic Recognition Scholars

Category : palm beach private school, private schools palm beach, the king's academy

The King’s Academy is proud to recognize 4 outstanding students who have been awarded either The National Merit Scholarship and/or The National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholarship. These academically talented high school seniors have been successfully named as Finalists and/or Scholars.  Thomas Lamb, as a Finalist, was one of 8,200 National Merit® Scholarships, worth more than $35 million.  Approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 54th annual National Merit Scholarship Program were named back in September 2009. Cameron Smith was named a Commended Scholar.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists fulfilled several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists were expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists win National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

More than 1.5 million juniors in over 21,000 high schools entered the 2009 National Merit Program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. The Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s self-descriptive essay and information about the Semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and in community activities.

Benjamin Bassett and Haley Heatley were named Scholars in The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP), which identifies nearly 5,000 outstanding Hispanic/Latino students each year. This nationwide list includes students from the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Mariana Islands, and Marshall Islands, as well as U.S. citizens attending international and Army Post Office (APO) schools. It also includes approximately 150 of the top scoring PAA™ students from Puerto Rico.

Future Clewiston Students Of The King’s Academy Visit Their Fellow Lions In West Palm Beach

Category : Uncategorized

While The King’s Academy will not open in Clewiston until August 2010, thirty Clewiston Christian School students recently received the opportunity for an early look at what they might expect when the new middle and high school opens its doors.  On February 18th, TKA’s West Palm Beach campus hosted all sixth through eighth graders from CCS.  The students and their teachers rode a King’s bus from Clewiston to West Palm Beach where they were greeted by TKA’s student ambassadors, a student-led service group.  The ambassadors accompanied Clewiston Christian students to a variety of middle and high school classes including science, English, math, dance, art, music, and physical education.

After eating lunch in TKA’s cafeteria the students attended an ice cream social. The King’s Academy’s prefect council, a senior leadership group, organized this little event in honor of the visiting students from Clewiston. The council members discussed student life, spiritual life, academics, athletics, and fine arts opportunities at The King’s Academy.  Several prefects also told the Clewiston group about what they liked best about attending King’s.  One Clewiston student asked, “Is there anything that you do not have here?”  CCS students also had the opportunity to visit TKA’s library and some even took in a Lady Lions softball game.

The King’s Academy—Clewiston Campus is currently accepting applications for 7th, 8th, and 9th grades for the 2010 – 2011 school year.  For more information about enrolling at The King’s Academy at Clewiston Christian School, please contact Alinda Faircloth, Director of Admissions at (561) 686-4244, extension 335.

The King’s Academy Choir Students Take A Bite Out Of ‘The Big Apple’

Category : Uncategorized

New York City is known for its fabulous production of Broadway shows and musicals. Aside from the enjoyment of this entertainment, observing these professionals proves to be a beneficial activity for aspiring musical theatre students.

The King’s Academy’s high school choirs and dance troupes recently returned from a four-day fine arts trip to New York City.  Jacquie Lopez, Dance Instructor, explained the purpose of the trip, “We believe that an important component of fine arts instruction is real world experience.  New York City is home to our nation’s best theater talent, so our students get to see the level of vocal, acting, and dance excellence that is possible.”

Highlights of the trip included a concert performance by The King’s Academy’s choirs at St. John the Divine Church, the largest cathedral in the world, as well as choir and dance classroom workshops taught by Broadway professionals.

Students also toured Lincoln Center having a chance to observe a combined rehearsal by The New York Philharmonic Orchestra, The Metropolitan Opera, and The New York City Ballet.  The group also took in two Broadway performances, “In the Heights” and “Mary Poppins.”  Nick Savarese, TKA Senior and a professional stage veteran at Jupiter’s Maltz Theatre, was particularly fond of the trip, as he has been invited to enroll in New York University’s theatre program in the fall. “Training in New York City is one of the best ways to try to break into the business,” he said.

In addition to fine arts instruction, students also took time to see the sights including:  Rockefeller Center, Greenwich Village, Times Square, the new World Trade Center construction, and the Statue of Liberty via the Staten Island Ferry.  Due to recent winter storms, students were also able to participate in a faculty vs. students snowball fight in Central Park.
